CHICAGO – State Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, recently hosted local residents and health care professionals for a discussion on issues such as access to mental health care, rising drug costs and health disparities.
“While politicians in Washington continue to put profit before people, it is more important than ever to make sure that Illinois residents have access to the quality, affordable health care our community needs,” said Slaughter. “Hosting meetings like these helps me understand what health care issues are most important to local residents and allows me legislate more effectively to address their needs.”
Slaughter discussed issues affecting the quality of healthcare in local communities along with ideas from community members for legislation to address them. Slaughter also highlighted recently passed legislation such as the Reproductive Health Act, which makes reproductive health care a fundamental right, and legislation to require insurance companies to cover epinephrine injectors for children. Community members were joined by healthcare professionals from Christian Community Health Center, Trinity United Church, and Advocate Medical group, who all gave attendees valuable information about low-cost health care options in their community.
